Making It Easier to Find a Trip

I led the product team in improving trip discovery by launching a Mobile Friendly Route Map, and later enhancing it with price points.

The Original Launch

Our improved route map makes it easy to find nearby airports and non-stop & connecting service available between the more than 120 destinations flown by Southwest Airlines. Features include:

  • Location services to quickly find nearby airports
  • Filtering to find non-stop destinations from your departure point
  • List view option as an alternative to map view
  • Easy Low Fare Calendar access to start searching

All from the comfort of your mobile device while on the go (or on the couch) or your computer.

Price Points Enhancement

Due to wonderful teamwork by our Cohearts, we upgraded the Route Map with Price Points. The map now shows the lowest available fare across our open schedule. From there, customers can easily search for the best fare for their travel dates using our Low Fare Calendar.

This enhancement provides a great framework for future improvements while giving customers immediate visibility into pricing.

How We Built It

The team leveraged unmoderated and moderated User Testing to hone in on the final design. Partnering with a design firm, we built a new React UI-based front-end that leverages existing data sources to display all available routes.

The team also improved route accuracy by building an enhanced service of all available market pairs.

Route map now displays the lowest available fare across our open schedule—making it easier than ever to find affordable travel.
